Why It’s Never Too Late to Learn Ballet
Learn the Fundamentals of Ballet at Our Calgary Dance Academy
There are some considerable benefits to learning or returning to ballet as an adult. Whether you’re a total beginner or took dance classes when you were younger, you don’t have to be a professional to enjoy everything that ballet has to offer at this stage of your life. In fact, there are many people who only discover the joys of ballet in their later years. After all, you’re never too old to explore new hobbies, especially one that is also good for your mental and physical well-being too. At Alberta Ballet School, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to take dance classes at our academy in Calgary, regardless of age or abilities.
Why Adults Learn Ballet Better
Age should not be a barrier to learning ballet. As long as you are willing to learn and are up for the challenge, anything is possible. Generally, adults are better at focusing on the lessons and staying present in the moment. Both of these fundamentals are extremely important when it comes to learning and growing your skills as a ballet dancer. Let’s take a closer look at some of the main reasons why adults learn ballet better:
- Adults Possess a Genuine Desire to Learn: Unlike a young child, where parents may have a strong influence over what they do, adults have the autonomy to control and decide if dance is really something they want to pursue. While learning ballet can be even more challenging at an older age, your personal reasons for taking up this art form will fuel your passion for learning and ultimately, help you become more successful at it.
- Adults Learn Faster: If you take up dance as an adult, it’s likely you have sacrificed time, money, and effort to show up at the studio for your classes each week. This, in turn, can be a great motivator for you to focus more and be present at the moment, both of which help you to learn faster. The adult brain is also much more mature and capable of understanding instructions in order to learn ballet.
- Adults are Independent: As adults, we are more likely to be able to financially support ourselves and make decisions about our lives that best serve us. You are in control of how and where you spend your hard-earned money and if you are to spend it on ballet lessons. This can be a big motivator and create a desire to become more motivated in class. In the end, it will serve to make your time in the studio really worthwhile.
- Adults Know Their Body Better: Because you know your body and its limitations, if any, you likely won’t have the same problems as a young dancer might and can, therefore, start your journey fresh. Even if you do have pre-existing issues from past injuries, most can be managed or fixed by learning good posture and strengthening your core in ballet class.
