Mature Dancers: Beginner ballet isn’t just for kids

“Trust me, you can dance.”

Stories of dancers seem to always begin with a reference to getting into a studio at a young age. This perception can be intimidating – and the dance community is working hard to break the stereotype. Dancing begins at any age – and it should never stop.

At Alberta Ballet School, we offer recreational ballet classes for adults, ages 16 and older. Whether you are new to ballet or are looking to get back to the barre after many years we offer several levels of ballet classes that are all accompanied by a talented pianist.

Adult ballet classes help to improve posture, balance, strength, and flexibility in a fun and relaxed environment. Alberta Ballet School offers 4 distinct levels of adult classes to ensure you are challenged appropriately.

      • Beginner

This level is geared for adult students who have little to no prior ballet training. The basics of posture and positions will be covered. A perfect introduction to dance.

      • Ballet 1

For adult dancers who have had a minimum of 1-2 years of previous ballet training and a moderate understanding of basic dance technique and vocabulary. Simple combinations of steps and short phrases focusing on the foundations of technique and overall enjoyment of dance.

      • Ballet 2

Suitable for dancers with a minimum of 3-4 years of previous training. A greater focus on the progression of technique, strength, and alignment, as well as an increase in the complexity of movement phrases. Students must have a good understanding of basic dance technique and vocabulary. A workout for the mind and body.

      • Ballet 3/4

For dancers at an intermediate level with a minimum of 5 years training. Students must have an intermediate understanding of dance technique and vocabulary. Classes will move quickly with an increase in the complexity and length of the exercises and phrases. Dancers will be expected to actively participate in the application of corrections.

Adult dancers can register for an entire sessional program (12 classes) or they can purchase a 5-class pass, or they can drop-in at a cost for any session. Flexibility in registration allows Alberta Ballet School to ensure the busy schedule of an adult is not a hindrance to fitting in time to dance.

We know that starting something new further along in your life (whether you are 16 or 60) can seem intimidating. We invite you to dance with us and find a new passion for challenging your body to move in new ways. No matter your experience level you are never too late to step up to the barre.

Ballet can transform the way that you think about your body and challenge your mind in ways that other activities cannot.
