Improving Dance Skills at Home

The dance studio is where we are used to working hard to perfect our dance skills, whereas our homes have always been our safe haven to unwind and relax. But this year looks a little different as we are dancing from home! Being at home is no excuse to stop practicing because truly, practice makes a great dancer.

At our dance studios in Edmonton, we make sure all dancers can bring home what they learn and practice every day. Here’s what we like to do at our Calgary dance classes to improve our dance skills at home.

Ready…Set…Goal!

Practicing without an end goal can get confusing sometimes. You might not know how much to do each day or what needs to be done. By setting goals that may be hard yet attainable, you can improve your commitment and ultimately, your dancing skills.

DDD (Don’t Dance Drained)

Dancing shouldn’t become a chore and it also shouldn’t disrupt your sleep or rest times. By making sure to practice at times when you have adequate energy and are able to focus, you can make sure that you optimize performance and still rest your mind and body in between. Studies show that peak energy times are most commonly between 10 am and 6 pm, so scheduling a practice then will prove more productive.

What’s New?

Keeping things interesting with new dances is a great way to improve your skills and boost your motivation. Different moves and dance styles can help you improve your form, strengthen different muscles and overall, keep things fresh and exciting. For ballet dancers, we recommend trying Contemporary or Jazz.

Dance, Sleep, Repeat

We learn best at dance class but repeating what we learn when we get home is the best way to improve our dance skills. The sooner you master techniques, movements and perfect your form, the sooner you can advance further into your dance career. Practicing at home also ensures that you are always prepared and ready to perform in class.

Scheduling Practice

Creating a schedule in advance to practice at home is the best way to make sure you fit dance into your life without overwhelming yourself each day about when to make time to practice. A schedule is also great for accountability because it mimics the way that you would show up to a scheduled dance class. This gets rid of the option for excuses, so grab your calendar and get to scheduling!

With these tips and tricks practiced at our dance studios in Edmonton, we’re sure you will be able to improve your dance skills from the comfort of your own home.
