How to Audition for Alberta Ballet School

Audition Season is upon us at Alberta Ballet School! We invite dancers from around the world to audition to join our 2023 Summer Intensive and our 2023-2024 Professional Division Program. Both of these programs offer the opportunity to engage with an internationally-recognized ballet curriculum. Students are guided by mentorship and instruction from experienced faculty, guest teachers, and Alberta Ballet’s professional dancers. Alberta Ballet School understands how critical balanced training is for the health of our dancers, so both programs also include engagement with our partners at the University of Calgary’s Dance Science faculty (member of the International Association of Dance Medicine). Additionally, we are accepting video submissions for our Post-Graduate and Alberta Ballet Trainee Programs. The audition process provides many opportunities to become a student at the school – we hope you will consider joining us.

2023 Alberta Ballet School Summer Intensive

The Summer Intensive is a three-week program that offers insight into intensive professional ballet training. We recommend this short-term commitment for students looking to get their feet wet in the world of professional ballet. The 2023 Summer Intensive will take place from July 17 to August 4, 2023, in Calgary, Alberta. Instruction will include Ballet, Pointe Work, Pas De Deux (for select levels), Repertoire, Variations, Contemporary, Character Dance, and Body Conditioning.

In addition to building skills with experienced professionals, the Summer Intensive is also an excellent opportunity to be considered for placement in the 2023-2024 Professional Division program.

2023-2024 Alberta Ballet School  Professional Division Programs

The Professional Division offers a deliberately curated curriculum involving academic instruction and artistic training for students in grades 7-12. This school-year program is designed for those who aspire to a career in professional dance. During each school day, instruction is divided into halves – one half features on-site our academic instruction, while the other involves artistic training with our dedicated artistic faculty. The Professional Division Programs also offer opportunities to engage in extracurricular activities, allowing students to plan and participate in community and school events to build school spirit, leadership and life skills, and lifelong friendships.

Students can audition to join the 2023-2024 Professional Division Programs directly, or by auditioning for the Summer Intensive and later be considered for the Professional Division Programs.

Why Alberta Ballet School?

Alberta Ballet School is one of the top professional ballet training programs in North America because of its holistic approach to academic and artistic pedagogy. Our teachers and instructors are well-versed in the balance required and the challenges faced by student-athletes. As a result, they are specially selected to deliver a world-class ballet curriculum with student success in mind.

A large part of striking the right balance for students involves health and wellness. Alberta Ballet School has invested in ensuring we have the resources and programs to support the learning process. Some of these include a physiotherapist, a performance psychologist, and a certified sports dietician on staff, as well as participation in the Alberta Ballet Dance Science Partnership. This partnership with the University of Calgary improves the experience of dancers by facilitating even better, long-term practices, but also aims to enhance the experiences of future dancers through the results of their research.

At Alberta Ballet School, our doors are open for those from all walks of life, all over the world. Should you choose to place your trust in us to study at our school, we will make sure your experience is as rewarding as possible. A third of our students join us from outside Calgary and 20% of our student body join us from outside of Canada, many of whom come from non-English speaking countries. We are extremely proud to meet students where they are in terms of language proficiency. Our exceptional team of faculty includes an English Language Learner (ELL) instructor, who provides several hours of personal instruction each week to ensure students have a safe environment to learn the language. If students with little to no English proficiency require extra support, our ELL instructor offers extra one-on-one time. Student needs are assessed based on an ELL assessment provided to all international students whose first language is not English. We have received feedback from our students that we provide a welcoming environment to develop and strengthen English language skills.

We request that all students attending Alberta Ballet School from out of town live in our residence. Located at Mount Royal University, students have their private floors separate from other university students. Our residence program includes accommodation in a secure building, full-time, on-site staff, a comprehensive meal plan, and daily transportation to and from the school. The residency program is available to our grades 7-12 students in the Professional Division, Post-Graduate Programs as well as participants in the Summer Intensive. Residence life during Summer Intensive is designed to create a fun, memorable experience, forging strong social connections in a peer group that shares a passion for dance and ballet.

The overall experience at Alberta Ballet School has been intentionally designed to create a welcoming and exciting environment for all students who walk (and dance!) through our doors. We continue to learn, from our students and our research partners, new ways we can further enrich the experiences of our attendees. We are proud to offer holistic programming including health and wellness, inclusion for students from outside Canada, and a variety of options to participate in our dance programming. With so many chances to audition for our programs, we hope you’ll find the option that works best for your schedule, level of experience, and lifestyle. Should you have any further questions about any of our programs or the audition process, please feel free to reach out – we would be pleased to provide more information. Send us a note on our websiteemail us, or give us a call at 403.245.2274 ext. 722.
