Alberta Ballet School FAQs

Do you have a little one who danced before they walked? Or perhaps you have (or are!) an older dancer who loves dance but doesn’t want to – or is too young to – pursue a professional Ballet career. Start your dancer off on the right foot and enroll them at Alberta Ballet School! Our quality classes are fun, interactive, and educational. We have answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about our acclaimed program.

Alberta Ballet School provides a welcoming and inclusive environment for dancers to foster and develop a love of dance and the many benefits that dance education provides. Children as young as three years old can experience the joy of movement and music in our preschool classes. We also offer adult classes for students 16 years of age and over – no experience necessary! Alberta Ballet School offers classes for dancers who have never stepped foot into a studio through to dancers who are no stranger to the stage. You’re never too old to take a dance class!
Full-year Alberta Ballet School students are expected to follow a dress code. All the uniform requirements for our Calgary and Edmonton locations can be found here.
Alberta Ballet School is fortunate to have skilled accompanists at both its Edmonton and Calgary locations. These musicians are not just piano players – they’re experts in playing for Ballet and they provide accompaniment for all Alberta Ballet School Ballet classes – from preschool to adult! This truly is a distinguishing factor for our studio and one we are proud to offer.
Alberta Ballet School has first-in-class leadership, instruction, and support. Our Calgary location is led by Co-Heads Ms. Julie Coleman and Ms. Sarah Dahlseide, while Ms.Margaret Dalwood is the head of our location in Edmonton, and Ms. Diane van Schoor provides artistic direction for both locations. Ballet is the foundation of dance – but it is not the only type of dance we offer at Alberta Ballet School. We are pleased to also offer classes in modern and jazz at both our Edmonton and Calgary locations as well as Ballet barre fitness classes for adults (Edmonton location only).
Alberta Ballet School is pleased to offer a professional division for aspiring professional dancers who are in grades 7 through 12. Our world-renowned program provides students with both artistic and academic training to prepare them for a professional career in dance. As opposed to taking classes through our recreational program, younger students ages 6 through 12 may instead choose to pursue foundation and intensive training classes, which provide high-level training for younger dancers to develop their skills and more deeply explore the art of Ballet.
Yes! Intensive training division students in grades 10-12 at both our Calgary and Edmonton locations are eligible to register in Alberta Ballet School’s Credit Program. Students enrolled in this program can earn up to 15 high school credits over three years for Ballet 15, 25, and 35, which are reported on their Alberta Education transcript. Ballet 35 may be used as a 30-level course for admission to many postsecondary programs.
Alberta Ballet School is pleased to offer our Diploma Program for intensive training division students. This diploma recognizes the many hours students devote to training and practising dance. It is geared toward students with a strong interest in Ballet who desire a school environment with high standards that affords the opportunity to develop as a dancer. Students can receive credit for Ballet 15, 25, and 35. While the program is designed to be completed in three years, students may begin in grade 11 or 12; however, they may not receive all course credits. Diploma students also complete an intermediate Ballet exam, volunteer both within the school and in the community, and participate in performances and workshops.
Alberta Ballet School is thrilled to partner with YYC Dance Project: an audition-only elite dance team of 50 members ages 8 to 17 that is focussed on training and performing. All members take their Ballet training exclusively through Alberta Ballet School.
